The 323rd
Bomb Squadron
Each
time the giant B17s lifted off from the tarmac at Bassingbourn,
their crews left behind the cool morning mists and emerald green
hillsides of England and flew into the boiling cauldron that was
the sky over Nazi Germany. Numbing cold. Bursting flak. Fighters
screaming in from above, bellow, and on all sides.
For
the aircrews of the Flying Fortresses, every mission was dangerous,
every flight a test of endurance and will. All started the same.
It was the ending that was always in question.
Almost
60 years ago, Steve Perri flew with the 323rd Bomb Squadron, curled
into a ball turret under the fuselage of the Delta Rebel.
He created this website as a memorial to his comrades from AF Station
121 in Bassingbourn, England from 1942 - 1945.
The
site is also meant to be an accurate and reliable historical record
of the events that took place in the skies above Europe during WWII.

Off-duty with the
323rd.
Do
you have a story
of the 323rd?
Do you remember the old war stories of your father, grandfather,
uncles? How
about photos of air- or groundcrew? Planes? Bassingbourn?
If so, let us know! We'd love to include them in our library.
E-mail us here!
