PANHANDLE DOGIE
42-5084 B-17F
91/323 OR

Lt. Anderson lost little time in transferring his affections and name to his replacement plane which arrived at Bassingbourn on 14th December. He would have even worse misfortune with this replacement ship.

On 3rd January 1943 the group's target was St. Nazaire and they encountered intense and accurate flak over the target. Andersen's crew were flying their new "Panhandle Dogie" that day, escorted by RAF Spitfires but, as soon as the escort withdrew, the Luftwaffe's Fw 190s swept in to attack. The assault continued until the formation was 80 miles out to sea but Panhandle Dogie had been an early victim, last seen going down in the vicinity of the target. Lt. Anderson and six of his crew were killed and two others were never found. Only the navigator, 1 Lt. Roten is thought to have survived.

This is one of the original Nine B-17 Flying Fortresses that formed the 323rd Bomb Squadron of the 91st Bomb Group.
