DIRTY GERTIE
42-30157 B-17f-90-BO
91/323-P OR-P
Assigned
to the group on 10th June 1943, this
camouflaged B17F model only lasted six
weeks before over-running the runway
on return from Kassel. By that time
she had already been renamed Hell's
Belles and, as a result of the damage,
was declared salvage and transferred
to Air Force Service Command. Dirty
Gertie was a gal well known to the men
of the Army Air Corps and a favorite
as a nose art title. Her unsavoury activities
were recorded in the ribald Army song
"Dirty Gertie from Bizerte",
the lyrics of which could perhaps be
described as being the best of bad taste.

Fancy Noses, by Ray Bowden"
